
Les Précieuses: MARIE MAS, Métamorphoses merveilleuses
As with all the promising brands I’ve seen grow—from Charlotte Chesnais to Marie Lichtenberg, or 5 Octobre to Vanrycke among the more established names—I cast over them the attentive eye of a godmother who predicted their luck and wonders from the cradle. If anything, I almost feel like the fairy godmother herself; their success showers my ego like a benevolent rain—I have foresight.
I say this with no false modesty: I know how to recognize a jewelry brand with true creative potential. I could have made it my profession, but I prefer to write their story rather than sell it. And at the same time, telling a story, I believe, is exactly what makes people dream.
When I met Marie four years ago, she showed me her first piece, the Swinging Stones necklace, a cascade of mobile stones playing with color transformation—from the deep violet of amethyst to the pastel pink of quartz, and stretching toward the intense blue of topaz. I was amazed, both by the technical feat and the sensation it evokes. The uninterrupted movement, orchestrated as surely as a cascade of dominoes, perfectly mimics the primal energy of wind or waves. It sends a shiver down your spine, just like witnessing the magical spectacle of a metamorphosis.
I met her again in early March in her showroom on Boulevard Saint-Antoine, in a residence of the Ateliers de Paris that hosts young artists. After ten days spent on the construction site of my house in Saint-Jean-de-Luz in pajamas, I had gone through hair and nails just to look presentable. Marie, naturally, was flawless—freshness needs no artifice.
